KATHMANDU, May 16: The only trolleybus service that provided service between Tripureshwor of Kathmandu and Surya Binayak of Bhaktapur is set to be closed forever.
The trolleybuses that provided services for last 32 years as environment friendly vehicles stopped their services on 2058 BS and resumed the services on 2060 with limited route from Tripureshwor to Koteshwor.
In order to widening BP Highway, 278 poles erected for the trolleybus service were decided to be taken out by Department of Road and thus, the service is found to be closed down.
The service that was established in 2032 BS with the investment of Rs. 40 million provided commuters cheap and dependable vehicular service.
After the service halted in 2058 BS for the first time, Municipalities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Madhyapur took the responsibility to resume the service and managed to run the buses from 22 Saun 2060 BS again in the rout.
‘After Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi denied to continue their investment Kathmandu Metropolitan City could not further continue the service,’ Executive Officer of the Metropolitan City Dinesh Thapalia said.
As the service could not continue in the area of Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi, both the Municipalities discontinued their investment.
An official at Department of Road said talks in this regard have been carried out among the three Municipalities and other concerned offices and the job of dismantling would be completed within one year.
